away from Pennsylvania.
Summary:
Delaware Colony was founded in 1701. The colony was founded because they wanted to
break away from the Pennsylvania colony. The colony was allowed to elect their
own government by William Penn when they were still part of Pennsylvania. After Penn allowed
them to do this, they broke away from Pennsylvania. Penn continued to be the governor of the
colony even after they broke away from Pennsylvania.
Economy:
Delaware
had a thriving economy. Farmers in the middle colonies produced surpluses
of wheat, barley, and rye. Delaware sold Cash Crops and was known as one
of the breadbasket colonies. The sent tons of beef, pork, and butter to
New York, Philadelphia, New England, to the South, west Indies, England,
and some parts of Europe. Settlers on the Delaware River valley
profited from the region's rich deposits of iron ore. Heating the ore in
furnaces they purified it and then hammered it into nails, tools, and parts of
guns .
Geography:
Delaware is the second smallest state, although it has some major
advantages. First, Sweden and the Netherlands fought over it before the
English even got there. They wanted the furs, fish and timber that was very
rich in that area. Also Delaware's rivers powered their sawmills and flour
mills. It had great land for cows, chickens, and pigs to graze.
Government:
The General Assembly is comprised of a State House of Representatives, whose 41
members are elected for two-year terms, and a State Senate, whose 21 members are
elected for four-year terms. Half of the Senate seats are contested in each
general election. The State Supreme Court consists of a chief justice and
four associate justices. All members are appointed by the governor, with
confirmation by the Senate, for a term of 12 years.
Way of life:
Farms in the middle colonies, such as Delaware, were very large, because of this,
houses were more spread out. Since they were more spread out, towns were less
important. They had counties, which contained smaller villages. The counties
were the main centers of government. They had no main religion, but they let
colonists worship freely. The children were taught by their parents. They used
books. And their parents taught them to farm.
